I figured it wouldn't be easy casting a solid show using only New Faces, but the only real challenge I faced was not one I expected.
I went in hoping to find eight strong new models, composed enough to walk in L'Oreal Fashion Week. I was determined not to have an all-white cast. I was worried Toronto would follow Montreal's lead, and ban models under that age of 16. I was even a bit scared that agencies wouldn't want to support the concept of a live New Face show.
In the end, the only thing I really had to worry about was cutting down the numbers. For whatever reason Toronto has become a gold mine of new talent, so despite my hope to get eight really good new models, I ended up with more great girls than the 20 outfits I could put them in.
Eleven agencies sent models to the casting for Nada Yousif's debut collection, resulting in close to 80 girls that were considered. Of the 20 that made the strongest impression, six were non-Caucasian, and six were under the age of 16. Everyone, regardless of age or race was cast because they deserved it. There was no political message behind this.
